Planning the Background

During week 9 I decided which of the concepts I wanted to have a proper go at, I chose the cavern setting for the first background, and I planned out what needs to be done and how I need to go by doing that.

First I started off trying to wrap my head around how the scrolling works, so I drew up a diagram.


This diagram also helped me decide how many layers I would need for the scrolling to work. I also drew a rough sketch to plan out the position of many of the assets.



The upper-most foreground layer will contain all the passing stalagmites and the next foreground layer will have some larger stalagmites as well as some hanging bats, they would be shaded in a darker tone because they're further back in the cave.

The "Play Area" will be right in the middle and will move according to how fast the player is moving, it will move at the most average speed whereas the layers on top will move the fastest and the layers in the back will move the slowest.

The layers behind the play area layer are the "Background" layers, these layers will scroll slower in descending order from the play area layer. This is how the feeling of depth is created, the further something is away from your eye the slower it appears to change places in the distance.

The layer in the far back will appear to to be almost static compared to everything else.

As for the actual composition of the background, I've tried to make the path, the stalagmites/stalagtites and everything else lead the eye into watching the outside holes. To do this I've tried to curve the path so the path for the eye is more apparent. There will also be a gap in the path to represent a significant opening that would cause death in my hypothetical game, but it will also open an area for the player to see the outside world.


For now, I'm gonna carry on with my week 9 work into week 10, while sorting out some layers for the background. I'll make a list for the assets sometime during the week, for sure there will be bats, stalagmites/stalagtites and open sea as assets.
